Matthew Lee Beard was one of the prominent young farmers of the Little Levels.  he was lovable, kind and considerate.  He always had a smile for everyone.  He was liked by everyone.

Matthew Lee Beard, Jr. son of Matthew Lee and Emma Clark Beard was born May 23, 1906. He departed this life after a very short illness on November 25, 1936 at the age of 30 years.  His funeral was conducted from the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church by his pastor, Rev. J. E. Knight assisted by Rev. Marlin B. Curry and Rev. A Dean Kessler.  He was laid to rest in the Beard Cemetery.   He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Clark Beard and little daughter, Betty Leith; his father Matthew Lee Beard, Sr., and the following sisters and brothers; Mrs. Mary Johnson Covesville, Virginia; Mrs. Eva Clutter, Hillsboro; Miss Leeta Beard, Joel and Henry Beard, of Hillsboro; and a host of relatives and friends.  On June 2, 1934, he married Miss Elizabeth Clark of Fairmont.  he united with the Oak Grove Church November 12, 1916.  he was a graduate of Hillsboro High School and attended West Virginia University.  He was one of the prominent young farmers of the Little Levels.  he was lovable, kind and considerate.  He always had a smile for everyone.  His place will be hard to fill in his church and community.  He was liked by everyone.  Our love and sympathy go to those bereaved.  May we all live that when God calls us home we will be ready to go.  "So live that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan, that moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."  J. Obituary : The community was shocked by the sudden and unexpected death of Matthew Beard of Hillsboro, on Wednesday morning, November 25, 1935 after a short illness of pneumonia.  His age was about thirty years.  This prominent young citizen was the son of M. L. Beard and the late Mrs. Emma Clark Beard.  his brothers are Henry and Joel Beard; his sisters are Mrs. J.C. Johnson, Mrs. Eric Clutter, and Mrs. Leila Beard.  he is survived by his wife, who was Miss Elizabeth Clark of Fairmont, and their little daughter Betty.  As this paper is printed, arrangements have not been announced but it is expected he funeral service will be Friday afternoon; burial to be in the family plot in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
http://www.pocahontastimes.com/obit0413.htm - Elizabeth Clark Beard, age 91, of Welaka, Florida, formerly of Hillsboro and Lewisburg, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Putnam Community Medical Center, Welaka, after a long illness.  Mrs. Beard was a former teacher at Hillsboro High School. She was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, and former member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, and active in Women of the Church.  Born October 4, 1908, at Grafton, she was the daughter of Frank Arthur and Lula (Leith) Clark.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Matthew Lee Beard, Jr., and Henry Harper Beard.  Surviving her are a daughter, Betty Beard Dorman, of Greensboro, North Carolina; a son, Jacob Wilson Beard, of Live Oak, Florida; a brother, John Arthur Clark, of Northfield, Minnesota; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Friday afternoon at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsboro, by the Rev. Susan Sharp Campbell.
Matthew Lee, Jr (1906-1936) married Elizabeth Clark. One daughter, Betty Leith married Clarence N. Dorman. Jr. They have three children; Donna, Debra and Clarence Neal III.
